Cooper River Marina: A Certified Clean Marina Committed to Sustainability

Cooper River Marina has proudly maintained Clean Marina certification for six years and has recently been recertified. Clean Marina recertification demonstrates environmental stewardship and commitment to sustainability, as well as provides opportunities to educate marina members and visitors about pollution prevention and marine conservation. “We first learned about the Clean Marina Program through other certified marinas in the region and quickly saw the value in pursuing certification ourselves,” says Assistant Manager, Tal McCaskill.

Originally part of the Charleston Naval Complex, Cooper River Marina was acquired by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) in 1995 through the Federal Lands to Parks Program. Following significant upgrades, the marina was opened to the public, providing much-needed access to the Charleston waterways.

Conveniently located just two miles north of the Ravenel Bridge on the Cooper River—only 15 minutes from downtown Charleston—Cooper River Marina offers premier amenities for both local and visiting boaters. The facility features include 165 annual slips, a transient dock with twelve 40-foot slips and 700 feet of face dock, as well as a day dock access for use of the marina’s pump-out station, ship store, and restrooms.

Clean, healthy waterways are essential for recreational water activities like fishing, boating, and paddling. As a public access point to these activities, Cooper River Marina is doing their part to help protect water quality. “We believe it’s important to be certified to let the public know where our agency stands regarding the environmental impacts of marinas and to do our part in keeping our waterways clean,” McCaskill noted.

Being a Clean Marina is about more than just recognition; it’s a commitment. It signifies dedication to reducing environmental impacts, protecting water quality, and preserving the natural beauty of the Cooper River for current and future generations. By taking these steps, Cooper River Marina is proud to play a role in ensuring that the Lowcountry’s waterways remain a vibrant and valued resource for all.
